About 115 New Braunfels residents were told to evacuate late Monday night due to an ammonia leak at the New Braunfels Smokehouse food production facility. Residents within two-tenths of a mile of the North Guenther Avenue location were told to leave their homes about 9:15 p.m. Monday. The voluntary evacuation order was lifted about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Ammonia is a colorless gas with a strong odor and can irritate the skin, mouth, lungs, throat and eyes, according to the . The chemical, which is found in many cleaners and fertilizers, can also be used as a commercial refrigerant.The regional Coma-Guada Hazmat Team responded and was able to stop the leak, the New Braunfels Fire Department said. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency are conducting air monitoring around the plant.New Braunfels Smokehouse has been producing smoked meats since the 1940s, according to the company's website.
