The World Health Organisation Director-General said '2022 must be the year we end the pandemic' but leaders and individuals must “make the difficult decisions” like cancelling events this holiday season.
“All of us want to spend time with friends and family. All of us want to get back to normal.
“There can be no doubt that increased social mixing over the holiday period in many countries will lead to increased cases, overwhelmed health systems and more deaths.” Dr Tedros said the fastest way to return to normality is for leaders and individuals to “make the difficult decisions” which are needed “to protect ourselves and others”.
“In some cases, that will mean cancelling or delaying events,” he said, just five days out from Christmas.“But an event cancelled is better than a life cancelled. The Director-General agreed “none of us” want to battle the same health crisis in 12 months. To end the pandemic in the coming year, Dr Tedros said inequity must be addressed and 70 per cent of the population of every country must be vaccinated against COVID-19 by mid-2022.explains how to do it as safely as possible, but remember there is no zero risk. â¬ï¸
