Melbourne radio host Tom Elliott has condemned calls for the ABC to receive greater funding after the head of the public broadcaster said it was needed to help achieve “renewal”.
A Melbourne radio host has condemned the ABC as"an exercise in failure" after ABC chair Kim Williams argued greater investment was needed to help achieve “renewal” at the public broadcaster .
“Of course, achieving our goals will also take something else. Something you have probably guessed: Investment. We all know greater investment will be needed,” he said. “The ABC gets $1.1 billion of your money – that’s taxpayers’ money – every year. And yet, the ABC is a failure,” Elliott said. “The ABC does have a role in rural and regional parts of the country where there’s often not many other stations - either TV or radio - to listen to,” the radio host said.
Elliott said ABC’s poor ratings came despite it having a “very strong signal, particularly when it comes to radio” and the fact it “doesn’t have to play ads”.
