Art at the Ion: A look at the installations, murals and more inside Midtown's former Sears building
Artist Preston Gaines stands inside his new interactive art installation, Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at The Ion in Houston. The window display is full of living plants, and projections in the background respond to movements of viewers outside of the window.By day, the Ion in Midtown buzzes with activity. ExxonMobil, Microsoft and Baker Botts LLP are some of the tenants who've already moved into the 266,000-square-foot facility, best known as the former Sears building.
His installation is titled"Fantasy Landscape ." It's interactive; a projection shows the viewer connecting with digital flowers cascading from the ceiling. On one such a occasion, a group of older Black women walked by and mused over"Fantasy Landscape's" nostalgic effect."For them, window displays were a seasonal thing back in Sears' heyday. Kind of like a big show," Gaines said."They showed such an appreciation for my work; it reminded them of the building in its original state. Moments like that matter the most.
"We received 60 applications for the first round," Faust says."We're looking for someone who looks to the windows for context and site-specific work. We don't want someone to come in and hang a painting." Some corporations, like Chevron, took art commissions into their own hands. The energy industry company's corner at the Ion has two murals by Emily Ding in its space. In keeping with the building's unofficial theme, Ding used aerosol spray and acrylic on gypsum to bring a tropical scene indoors.
"I was connecting to nature, but also using a lot of technology," she recalls."I explored this other side of me -- the antithesis of me. So a lot of the pieces are artificial. This piece was really exploring that extreme of Astroturf and flamingos. Think about nature, but also how we've separated ourselves from it."
