“This is the heaviest snowfall the Anchorage area has seen in over 20 years,” said state Department of Transportation spokesman Justin Shelby. “Our crews are keeping up as best they can.”

The snow started Tuesday afternoon, increased overnight and continued into Wednesday, piling onto city streets.

The Anchorage and Mat-Su Borough school districts decided early Wednesday to close schools for the day. After-school activities were also canceled. The University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University closed Wednesday, too. “Over on the east side, we’ve been getting reports as high as 18 inches out of the snow,” Kutz said. “And that’s over on the Hillside.”Snow should taper off Wednesday afternoon, giving crews a chance to clear area roads, Kutz said. Temperatures will begin a fall to lows in the mid-teens Wednesday evening, with single digits expected by Thursday.

Community theater is a passion and is usually done not out of pay, but out of love for the art — stretching themselves thin to give local actors an outlet here in Anchorage and to give people the opportunity to catch live theatrical shows. Theater offers the beauty and danger of doing live shows with amateur actors and small stages. Why do they do it? They love it. And do they take themselves seriously? Of course they do, but they have a sense of humor and history about their craft and take great pride in getting shows off the ground and up and running. Theater passion is real and lives inside these two and the actors that choose to perform in local theater.
