A 33-year-old man is accused of breaking into his neighbor’s home in South Anchorage and beating him Saturday night. The 88-year-old neighbor died at the hospital from the injuries, police said.
Phillip Barger is facing felony charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, burglary and misdemeanor assault in the death of Francisco Martin Jr.
Barger knocked on Martin’s door around 9 p.m. and forced his way into the trailer home when the door was opened by a woman who lives with Martin, according to a criminal complaint written by an Anchorage police officer and included with charges. He pushed her out of the way and caused her minor injuries in the process, the complaint said.
Barger charged at Francisco and hit him repeatedly, including after he had already fallen to the floor, the complaint said. The woman sought help from her neighbors and several of them confronted Barger as he left the residence, the complaint said. He ran from the area and was arrested around 10:30 p.m. after he was found hiding less than a mile away,One of Barger’s family members had “a longstanding feud over small neighborhood disagreements,” the complaint said.Barger is on probation for a conviction of criminally burning land in 2019.
