A grove of ancient Huon pine trees, some estimated to be 3,000 years old, in Tasmania's remote north-west is facing a threat from the Yellowband Plain bushfire. The Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service is prioritizing the protection of the grove, with aerial and ground crews working to defend it.

Bushfires in 2016 also saw 19,936 hectares of the wilderness World Heritage Area burn, prompting a Senate inquiry to make six recommendations.
