Macquarie Dictionary has revealed its Word Of The Year, and it's sure to spark some conversation. 9News

As 2019 draws to a close, Macquarie Dictionary has decreed its Word Of The Year, and it's surely one to spark some conversation. It defined "cancel culture" as "the attitudes within a community which call for or bring about the withdrawal of support from a public figure, such as cancellation of an acting role, a ban on playing an artist's music, removal from social media, etc., usually in response to an accusation of a socially unacceptable action or comment by the figure.

It is no doubt an apt choice, as debate continues to rage over whether the "cancellation" of a public figure for unsavoury acts constitutes censorship, prudishness, or simply well-merited consequences."A term that captures an important aspect of the past year's Zeitgeist … an attitude which is so pervasive that it now has a name, society's cancel culture has become, for better or worse, a powerful force," the choosing committee said in a statement.
