John Clover, prosecuting, told the court Steele had met the victim's mother online before travelling to a resort in the Philippines with his family in 2018. "Those payments allowed him to justify the offending … the payments were, in our submission, to facilitate the offending," Mr Clover said.Judge Paul Muscat said it was "hard to imagine, notwithstanding that it's true, that the mother was complicit" in his "perverted" offending, while Steele had "taken advantage of their poverty to make payments so that he could sexually offend".
The girl said she pretended she was not affected because she did not want other people to see her suffering."I want the pain to leave me alone and pester me every time I recall something in the past." "All forms of child abuse and exploitation cause significant harm and are associated with a wide range of adverse outcomes for victims," she said.
He said his client had been "looking for companionship" online through overseas dating apps when the offending began.
