Andrew Forrest says fuel loads, not climate change, are primary cause of bushfires | latikambourke

Andrew Forrest wants donors around the world to contribute to his private Fire Fund.Mr Forrest is aiming to raise half a billion dollars for his foundation and told CNN that it would fund new "peer-reviewed science into climate change," saying the "science has so far to go."

"Arsonists have had a horrible impact, the fuel load has probably had the greatest impact," he told interviewer Christine Amanpour."This is why we need the science and there is no doubt that you've got this red warning light on the dashboard of the world called Australia, saying we're all existing in a gently, slowly warming climate on this planet Earth."

Mr Forrest said carbon was "partially responsible for the slowly warming planet which has an impact on fires", but said unless the cash was raised to fund scientific research "we're going to be having the debates the whole time.""We need to raise $500 million as a minimum, I have done a PhD in marine ecology, I know the science must be done, we must take it out of this football field of politics and have peer-reviewed science ...

When Amanpour pointed out that the majority of climate scientists are unanimous in the link between fossil fuels and climate change, Mr Forrest said the science was incomplete. "The science has so far to go, we cannot say there's a single reason, if someone says 'Oh it's climate change,' they're copping out of their responsibilities," he said.

'Miserable ghost' Malcolm Turnbull tries to re-write his record on bushfires | Sky News Australia'Miserable ghost' Malcolm Turnbull tries to re-write his record on bushfires | Sky News AustraliaSky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton\n\nThe miserable ghost of Malcolm Turnbull has been caught out trying to re-write history by penning an article in US media claiming he was the Prime Minister who held back the “climate-denying political right in Australia”.\n\nMr Turnbull wrote that the deadly bushfires were proof the “wicked, self-destructive idiocy of climate denialism must stop”.\n\n“Even as the fires rage, Murdoch’s News Corp newspapers and television networks have been busy arguing that arsonists or a lack of controlled burning are the real causes of the fires,” he wrote.\n\nOh Malcom, how times have changed since you were Prime Minister.\n\nIt is almost as if you forgot how you overlooked how you personally responded to the horror bushfire which tore through Tathra, wiping out 69 homes in 2018.\n\nGreens Senator Richard Di Natale complained in the aftermath that a lack of renewable investment had contributed to the bushfire season become more dangerous.\n\nAnd how did Mr Turnbull respond to those comments?\n\n“I'm disappointed that the Greens would try to politicise an event like this,” he said.\n\n“You can't attribute any particular event, whether it's a flood or fire or a drought or a storm, to climate change.\n\n“But clearly this is an environment, we have an environment, which has extremes. Bushfires are part of Australia, as indeed are droughts and floods.”\n\nMalcolm Turnbull stated as a fact that you could not blame the bushfire in 2018 on climate change.\n\nThen two years later he wrote an article claiming that comments similar to his own were the fault of the evil Murdoch family.\nHow pathetic. How opportunistic.\n\nBut Mr Turnbull was not done attempting to re-write history.\n\n“As Prime Minister, I tried to ensure that our climate and energy policies were governed by engineering and economics, not ideology and idiocy,” he said.\n\n“Tragically, the climate-denying political right in Australia has turned what should be a practical question of how

'Climate warriors' use bushfires to push climate change inaction agenda: Credlin | Sky News Australia'Climate warriors' use bushfires to push climate change inaction agenda: Credlin | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Peta Credlin says adopting an environmental policy which is “out of step with the rest of the world” will have virtually “nil-all impact” on the bushfires in Australia, but instead will carry “heavy economic costs”.\n\nMs Credlin said there was no doubt “climate warriors” have seized the issue of bushfires to “prove that not enough is being done about climate change” with the apparent disregard of Australia’s bushfire history.\n\nNSW Environment Minister Matt Kean told Sky News on Sunday there were federal Liberal members pushing the government to soften its position on climate change, but Ms Credlin said Mr Kean is doing “diddly squat” when it comes to his own responsibilities to reduce bushfire hazards in New South Wales.\n\n“It's a massive over-reach for Kean to demand that because of these fires, the PM must go re-cast climate policy as a result,” she said.\n\nThe federal government “should take reasonable steps to reduce emissions,” Ms Credlin said, but emissions reductions should not come “at the expense of Australia’s economy… and the ability of ordinary households to keep their lights on”.\n\n“The federal government's climate change policy might change a bit in emphasis, but fires or not, it won't be changing much at all in substance”.\n\nImage: Getty
