The Victorian Premier defended his latest initiative to fight the winter Omicron wave and urged residents to take 'small steps' to help protect those most vulnerable in the community.

The health care system was overwhelmed in July with competing demands from the latest Omicron wave, flu numbers and other winter-related infections.

“Winter is never easy, but this has been particularly challenging time and each of us can play a small part,” he said. As of August 9, Victoria has more than a thousand active cases with 673 in hospital and 25 cases needing extra care in ICU.
