Public school teachers and university towns helped power Democrat challenger Andy Beshear to a narrow victory over Republican Governor Matt Bevin in the Kentucky gubernatorial contest.

The fact that the rally was in Lexington, home of the University of Kentucky, and that Beshear carried Fayette County by a 2:1 margin, offers a valuable insight into one of the most important forces in the election. Throughout his tenure, Governor Bevin had consistently ridiculed, blamed, and defunded school teachers and higher education institutions. Tuesday, the educators got their revenge.
Tuesday, we learned how that strategy worked out for him. Andy Beshear, whose father, Steve Beshear, had been governor before Bevin, won Jefferson County by 98,772 votes and Fayette County by 36,482 . Beshear won seven of the eight counties where a public university was located, and his margin of loss in the one county Bevin won was smaller than the spread in 2015.
