The QPR hitman suffered a devastating blow when he was crocked in training but will remain with the squad in Germany.

But Scotland skipper Andy Robertson is thrilled the big striker is still coming along for the ride. The QPR frontman suffered a devastating blow last week when a freak training ground twist saw the 28-year-old suffer an ankle injury that’s now ruled him out of this month’s festival of football. It was a nightmare moment for both boss Steve Clarke and his players just a fortnight out from their big night in the continental spotlight as they take on hosts Germany in the June 14 opener.

“Although he can’t contribute on the pitch, he can contribute off it. If the big man wants to do that, then it’s happy days for us because he really is a massive part of our squad. So I’m delighted that he’s going to come. It had to be his own choice. We wouldn’t have forced him if his head space wasn’t right. But he’s managed to get over it a lot quicker than I would so fair play to him for that. I’d love to have him on the pitch but the next best thing is with us off it.

The cruel luck which means Dykes - plus fellow absentees Lewis Ferguson, Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson - will now sit out the tournament has opened the door for a couple of new faces. Ross McCrorie earned his first cap in the 2-0 win over the men from the Rock while Robertson’s young Anfield colleague Ben Doak could be set to do the same against Finland on Friday night, provided he’s fully recovered from a recent knee issue.

“But it is what it is. It’s not going to stop us from going to enjoy it, from going to compete. For the experienced lads, we’ll always try to help the newer lads. He told Sky Sports: “We are where we want to be. Monday night was a good thing for us to get back to winning ways, to get that confidence, to get back playing together, to get people minutes on the pitch. So it was a worthy exercise. Friday will be a tougher task and it will be perfect for us to step it up again and put full focus on Germany.
