Fairfield Lake State Park closed Feb. 28. Two weeks earlier, the company that owns it announced its plan to end the park lease and sell the land to a developer who wants to turn it into a gated community with million-dollar homes and a private golf course.

When they heard of the park’s closure, they decided to switch to Lake Fork. When they heard about the reopening, they decided to make the more than two hour trek from the East Texas lake each day to cast their lines in Fairfield one last time.“When I fished here in the summer I said, ‘Cody, we’re coming to this lake,’ but right before , they closed it,” Budenbender said. “I was devastated that he didn’t get to experience it, and so when they reopened it we were so excited.
