But here’s the catch, and I will now endeavour to be more accurate in my descriptors. A disaffected group of now ex-Anglicans left the official Anglican Church of Australia to form an unrecognised, non-Anglican non-diocese, with a bishop who will have no formal ties to the Anglican Church of Australia.
The reader, and most Anglicans, may well be stumped by all this. One might ask, “But are they allowed to say they are an ‘Anglican diocese’?”to the Anglican Church of AustraliaIsn’t it a case of having and eating one’s cake? I suspect lawyers will be called upon for advice.There is also a striking irony in the appointment of Glenn Davies, given his famous, “Please leave us!” speech at the Sydney Diocesan Synod in 2019, when he urged supporters of same-sex marriage to quit the church.
