The pair had perished after choosing to stay and defend the family property at Wandella, 20km north-west of Cobargo.

PM calls for changes to hazard reduction laws amid criticism of the Coalition's climate change policies | Sky News AustraliaThe prime minister said Australia may need to review its hazard reduction laws as the country grapples with an “extraordinary” fire season. \n\nIn NSW, nine people have died and the Rural Fire Service said 382 homes have been lost on the South Coast since New Year's Eve - and just under 1,300 homes have been destroyed across the state this bushfire season. \n\nIn Victoria, the navy has been deployed to evacuate at least 800 people who are stuck in the coastal town of Mallacoota, while grave fears are held for 17 missing in East Gippsland since New Year’s Eve.\n\nMr Morrison said land clearing laws may need to be reviewed considering this summer’s bushfire season. \n\n“Other issues of how you manage hazard reduction are important, because as you say, the impact, more broadly of climate change on these issues has a pronounced effect on the length of the fire season,” he said. \n\nThat, equally then has a need to address issues around hazard reduction for national parks, dealing with land clearing laws, zoning laws and planning walls around people’s properties and where they can be built in countries like Australia, up and down the coast”. \n\nMr Morrison denied the Coalition isn't doing enough to combat climate change, arguing the government is taking 'sensible” action on the issue.\n\n“Let me be clear to the Australian people, our emissions reductions policies will both protect our environment and seek to reduce the risk and hazard we are seeing today, at the same time, it will seek to make sure the viability of people’s jobs and livelihoods, all around the country.” \n\nLabor and other parties have accused the Coalition of not doing enough to combat dangerous climate change, which they argue is exacerbating the current bushfire crisis.\n\nImage: News Corp
