Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell has been banned from entering wetlands for the entire season after attempting to rescue wounded ducks.
"My privilege as a politician is one I will always use to make our community safer - and that means for wildlife, too.”Authorities have banned Ms Purcell and veteran anti duck hunting campaigner Laurie Levy from the wetlands for the duration of the season. Picture: Supplied “But it is my first duck rescue since Labor committed the greatest betrayal to our native waterbirds, ignoring their own parliamentary inquiry recommending a ban on recreational duck shooting,” she explained. On Saturday, The Herald Sun revealed that Ms Purcell and Laurie Levy, a veteran anti-duck hunting campaigner, were caught by the authorities from the Game Management Authority while trying to rescue wounded birds from a motorboat on the Johnson Swamp wetlands in Kerang.
“I am absolutely furious at this decision. So much time and resources and taxpayer money went into this inquiry, and the community believed that it would have an impact,” Ms Purcell told Sky News Regional Breakfast.
