We chat with veteran theater and Broadway actors annharada and jaimecamil about returning to the world of Schmigadoon in season 2 of the AppleTVPlus series, bringing live performance energy to television screens, and relating to their characters:
Schmigadoon! season 2 is about to begin on Apple TV+, bringing with it a bevy of new songs, a new city, and new characters . While the first season of Schmigadoon! took on musicals from the 1940s and '50s, Schmigadoon! season 2 sets its sights on musicals from the '60s and '70s, including Chicago, Hair, and Sweeney Todd.
Jaime Camil: Yeah, one hundred percent. But I mean, then Jane Krakowski comes in and then does it a hundred times better, and more gifted, [with] more talent, and you're like, "Jane, stop it already. You're destroying it for all of the Billy Flynns out there." But yeah, it was fun, man. It was fun. It's a new season, it's a new show. It lives in a completely different universe than season 1, and that's super fun because it seems like a new show. It's incredible.
You're both such experienced musical theater performers. What are the challenges of performing musical numbers for the screen while making sure it still comes across with any amount of the same impact as a stage?Ann Harada: Yeah, that's how I felt. I'm a theatre person; I don't really know that much about camera work. In Schmigadoon! it's sort of like, "Well, I'm just doing a musical.
It seems like the trend is to keep progressing forward through musical history. Are there musicals or musical theater characters that you two would love to visit in a future season?
