Another reason Cathcart can stay grounded, she says, is that her family will not let her get a big head. When the actor talks about her support system at home — her mom and dad, plus an older sister who’s also her best friend — it almost sounds as if she’s describing the tight-knit Song Coveys. “My sister likes to say all this is because of her,” Cathcart says, laughing.
Yet it was after filming a spot for Crayola at age 10 that Cathcart knew that she loved acting. “I so distinctly remember getting in the car and being like, ‘That was the best day of my life,’” she says. “Little me was just so happy and excited to be remotely in the world and to be on set.”What also stabilizes Cathcart is the fact she has a separate life from work as a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
When she was 12, Cathcart saw her “life flipped upside down” when she landed the lead role in the PBS Kids show, a live-action educational series where child “agents” solve strange problems using math. Because the entire cast was kids her age, the show became a “positive, safe environment to not know what I was doing,” she says. “I learned all of my foundations. I think that was like acting school.
Cathcart’s family has continued to back her unconditionally as her career has grown. Since 2017, she’s appeared in two of Disney’s, and scored a supporting role in the network’s 2021 original. “I’m so grateful because there’s no way I could do this without my family, all their support and sacrifices,” she says. “It was never a thing of my mom pressing me to do this. It was my decision. We would stop doing it if I wanted to. I’m so lucky.
All the while, Cathcart juggled work with high school, which she graduated in 2021. Now, she’s balancing work with attending college as she pursues a double major in sociology and creative writing. As she wraps up her freshman year, she says she particularly liked the gender and sexuality unit of her introductory sociology class. And in her creative writing courses, Cathcart enjoys penning stories for children and young adults, as well as writing comedy.
