Under California law, Heche is already considered dead, but her medical team kept her on life support while they determined if any of her organs were viable to be donated.

A spokesperson for actress Anne Heche said she was put on life support after suffering an injury that deprived her brain of oxygen after a fiery vehicle crash a week ago. It was determined that she was"brain dead," and her survival wasn't expected, according to a statement from a representative.

A family's statement read,"We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend. Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact," CNN reported.

Toxicology tests, which can take weeks to complete, must be performed to identify the drugs more clearly and to differentiate them from any medication she may have been given for treatment at the hospital.
