Lockdowns and the resulting social isolation profoundly impacted children and teenagers

Shortly after the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, most countries implemented stringent lockdown measures to varying degrees that included school closures, immediate closures of non-essential businesses, and banning public gatherings. The resulting social isolation and lack of structure in daily life profoundly impacted children and teenagers.

This new data on eating disorders was collected from six pediatric tertiary-care hospitals in Canada from January 1, 2015, to November 30, 2020.at Montreal Children’s Hospital and team conducted this study of 1883 children and adolescents with newly diagnosed anorexia nervosa. Out of this, 91 percent of the patients are female. The median age of the 1883 youths was 15.9 years. In their study, the researchers found that in Canadian provinces with higher rates of Covid-19 infections, the trend of increasing number of newly diagnosed anorexia children and teenagers was also more pronounced.

The largest increase was reported in the central Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. In contrast, Western Canada reported relatively small growth in COVID-19 cases, and few cases of anorexia were reported in Atlantic Canada. The researchers attributed the increase of hospital visits to the closure of primary care clinics in many provinces that limited access to other mental health community resources.
