Toyota, Mazda and Suzuki issued voluntary recalls for the vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 1999, offering to buy back affected vehicles.A recall has been issued for 18,000 vehicles in Australia.

"These airbags could injure or kill people in the car by mis-deploying in an accident and propelling parts or metal fragments into the cabin of the vehicle at high speed," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission acting chairperson Stephen Ridgeway said. "The airbags have also, in some instances, not fully inflated in a crash, thereby failing to protect drivers as expected."

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to stop driving them immediately and contact their manufacturer for a free inspection.Audi, BMW and Ford have already issued voluntary recalls of nearly 17,000 vehicles, while recalls are expected to be issued by Honda and Mitsubishi "very soon", the ACCC said.
