Former Wallabies and Waratahs coach Michael Cheika looks set to return to what he does best with a new 'fixer-upper' job coaching second-division French club Beziers | geerob

Former Wallabies and Waratahs coach Michael Cheika looks set to return to what he does best with a new 'fixer-upper' job coaching second-division French club Beziers.

A string of high-profile players have been linked with the new set-up, including All Blacks Ma'a Nonu and Beauden Barrett, as well as former France international Freddie Michalak in a coaching role.Despite speculation linking Cheika to UK Premiership side Gloucester, many believe Beziers would be the better fit for the Super Rugby and European Cup-winning coach.

Beziers will not be recognised widely in Australia but the club was considered a powerhouse of French rugby in the 1970s and 1980s, before falling on hard times this century. They were relegated to D2 after the 2004/05 season and fell further to the amateur Federale 1 in 2009, before returning to D2 after winning the D3 title in 2011.

For Cheika to be interested he would likely have negotiated a position which sees him assume full control of the rugby department. His tenure at Stade Francais between his Leinster and NSW appointments ended abruptly over interference from head office.Cheika most recently worked with the Roosters in the NRL in a consultant capacity and said he enjoyed being back coaching again.
