Another poll, another GovRonDeSantis win, another Trump loss

WPA Intelligence released a new poll of likely voters last week showing DeSantis beating Biden in a head-to-head matchup 45%-42%. The same poll shows Biden beating former President Donald Trump 49%-41%.In a similar poll of 1,000 voters conducted last month by Suffolk University, DeSantis also beat Biden 47%-43%, while Biden beat Trump 47%-40%. That same Suffolk poll also shows DeSantis beating Trump in a head-to-head Republican primary 56%-33%.

A large driver of Trump’s weakness against Biden and DeSantis is that most simply don’t like him. A full 60% of voters in both the Suffolk and WPA polls have unfavorable impressions of Trump. Meanwhile, just 39% of voters have an unfavorable opinion of DeSantis. While the vast majority of voters do recognize DeSanits’s name, however, not as many recognize his face. While 98% of voters could name Trump and Biden by looking at their photos, just 64% could recognize DeSantis’s picture. But 80% of voters did recognize DeSantis’s name.

The WPA and Suffolk results are in line with a slew of other polls showing that when it comes down to a head-to-head choice between DeSantis and Trump, DeSantis wins. But when other candidates such as Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and former Vice President Mike Pence are added to the mix, Trump pulls ahead.

DeSantis hasn’t announced he is running for president yet, and it is still too early to expect him to do so, but when he does announce, other Republicans thinking of running really ought to ask themselves why they are so eager to help Trump win the nomination, setting up an easy reelection win for Biden.
