The challenges of doing business with an increasingly unpredictable China appeared forgotten, as Anthony Albanese and business flocked to Xi Jinping’s trade fair.

| On the surface, Xi Jinping’s annual import-export trade fair in Shanghai is an impressive show of China’s commercial might.

The European Union Chamber of Commerce, the most outspoken in China, says the CIIE is more of a politically motivated PR event. “You can say CIIE has become more of a political showcase rather than a business event,” Carlo D’Andrea, the chamber’s vice president, told reporters on Friday. Forty per cent of the 325 American companies polled, by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, also said they were looking to redirect investment originally planned for China elsewhere.
