Hours after unveiling a proposal for a social media ban for children under 14 years old, the prime minister has revealed his preferred age limit would lean closer to 16. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his government would introduce legislation to enforce a minimum age for access to social media in a bid to protect young people from risks to their mental health and safety.
The PM to introduce legislation to enforce a minimum age for access to platforms The legislation, to be introduced before the next election, will draw on a report by former High Court chief justice Robert French, released in South Australia on Sunday. Albanese said technology moved fast and it would be difficult for the government to protect every child from every threat - but something had to be done. “Parents are worried sick about this,” Albanese said.
