The Albanese government says Kevin Rudd will remain Australia’s ambassador to the United States next year, even if Donald Trump returns to power in the November presidential election.
Already a subscriber?he may not deal with Mr Rudd due to previous personal attacks on him by the former prime minister, both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong stood behind Mr Rudd who has only been in Washington a year.
But on Wednesday, following Mr Trump’s comments in a Sky News interview with former right-wing European MEP and Brexiteer Nigel Farage, Senator Wong said Mr Rudd was working well with both sides of US politics in advancing the AUKUS pact and would continue to do so.“He’s been extremely active in engaging with members of Congress on both sides of politics,” she said.
Mr Rudd replaced Arthur Sinodinos as the Australian ambassador to the US in March 2023 after already branding Mr Trump variously as “the most destructive president in history”, “nuts”, a “traitor to the West” and being guilty of “rancid treachery”. Mr Rudd’s media office declined to comment on the remarks, but the issue featured in federal Parliament where the Opposition sought to make it about Mr Albanese’s judgment.
“They need to be answered, and Mr Rudd needs to repair the relationship,” Mr Dutton said. “That’s the point we are making, and we won’t be …intimidated by these bully boys over there.” “The challenge with Trump 2.0 is he knows where everything is, whereas the first three years of the last Trump administration were basically a beginner’s guide to being a president,” he said.
