Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton are in Rockhampton for Beef 2024. One suspects Labor will need to look elsewhere in Queensland to win seats at the next election.
| One pitfall of addressing the media right next to the judging arena at Beef Week is that you are competing with the guy on the PA.
In central Queensland, that extends to the Gillard government’s ad hoc ban in 2011 on live cattle exports, which caused enormous hardship and loss to the multibillion-dollar industry. It’s still a burning issue in these parts, so much so that at the Beef 2024 dinner on Monday night, industry luminary Tracey Hayes gave the prime minister both barrels in her keynote speech.
Albanese assured implicitly that Labor would never repeat the mistake. He reminded producers it was the Coalition, not his government, that wanted to suspend the exports when Indonesia had an outbreak of foot and mouth disease last year.Other bugbears included the government’s plan to impose a biosecurity levy on farmers. Watt said it would account for $1 per cow, each of which was currently selling for $2000 to $2500 per head.
“Bugger all” was how he described the previous government’s contribution to road infrastructure compared with Labor’s record, when pressed by a local reporter.“The LNP are good at funding billboards in this town, talking about the Rocky Ring Road – it’s a pity they didn’t build it,” he said.
