Ahead of law enforcement groups meeting tomorrow to discuss the arson attack at Ripponlea's Adass Israel synagogue, the prime minister says in his view it was an act of terrorism.
Anthony Albanese says his "personal view" is the attack constitutes terrorism.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his personal view was that last week's attack on a Melbourne synagogue was an act of terror.
Members of Melbourne's Jewish community have gathered for a vigil near the synagogue which was targeted by arsonists on Friday. Mr Albanese said he would respect the "technical process, one which the opposition should be aware of …" Establishing a motive that fits these criteria is the key threshold for state police to declare something a terrorist act.
The declaration unlocks additional law enforcement capabilities including co-operation between state and federal authorities and access to overseas intelligence.Mr Albanese said the attack on the synagogue was part of "a worrying rise in anti-Semitism". " deliberate decision to seek political advantage over the course of the last 12 months on this issue and play to a domestic audience of green voters has been deplorable and one of the worst things I've seen in public life," he said.
