Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australians could have had higher electricity bills if his government didn’t act last year to pass emergency legislation.

Last week the Australian Energy Regulator revealed its draft default market offer decision for the upcoming 2023/2024 financial year.

Parliament was recalled before Christmas to pass emergency legislation to lower energy prices through a $125 per tonne cap on coal – to be imposed by Queensland and New South Wales – and a $12 a gigajoule limit on gas for 18 months.
