The clinic was bombed in 1998, killing an off-duty police officer working as security, and severely injuring a nurse. Two of Birmingham’s most prominent anti-abortion protest leaders, Jim Pinto and the Rev. Terry Gensemer, have been fighting abortion in Alabama for decades.
“If it is an actual draft, there are going to be many drafts,” Pinto said. “To take this as if it’s a final opinion, it’s not.”“I’m cautiously optimistic,” Gensemer said. “It’s possible it’s on track and that it will happen.”“Even if this is true, they still have time to change their minds,” Gensemer said.
The Alabama Human Life Protection Act was written by Birmingham Attorney Eric Johnston, who has drafted more than 12 anti-abortion laws for Alabama including the near-total ban passed in 2019. He cautioned against assuming anyone knows what the court will rule in the Mississippi case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
With Democrats in control of Congress and the White House, it increased pressure for a law to legalize abortion.
