Taiwan's main opposition party moves to distance itself from China after suffering another massive defeat at the polls.

A recall election is held when the electorate petitions to vote on the performance of an elected representative before their term has ended when they have been seen as ineffective.

He blamed the media in part for the result, saying he had been subjected to "constant smears, rumours and attacks". He has one week to leave office, unless he decides to appeal.Opponents portray Mr Han and the KMT as doing China's bidding by supporting Beijing's "one country, two systems" model to get Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty. The KMT says it has never supported this.

"Chairman Johnny Chiang of the KMT states firmly that the Party is 'opposed to communism and aimed at building a democratic, free, prosperous and united country' and its members have always put Taiwan first for the benefit of the people," the KMT said in a statement late on Saturday.
