Protests have erupted across Iran after officials admitted to accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian passenger plane.

Protesters took to the streets in the capital Tehran and other major city centres to demand the country's supreme leader step down.

Many of the protests were organised by students - outside prestigious universities. A number of people who died in the plane crash were alumni of colleges in the Islamic Republic. Image: AP
