ACRONYM's Anti-Trump ad campaign will target voters in Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin

The Democratic-aligned digital group ACRONYM is launching a $1 million ad campaign in five swing states focused on impeaching President Donald Trump, answering a barrage of ads from Trump and allies condemning Democrats over the impeachment push.

Officials for the nonprofit described the $1 million campaign as a large-scale testing effort to see how to best persuade voters to support impeaching the president.“Trump’s spending online [is] largely focused on keeping his base fired up and on fundraising. He’s not spending as much time talking to that broader swath of American people who may have questions about this process and may have not made up their minds,” said Shannon Kowalczyk, chief marketing officer of ACRONYM.

The organization will use ads and videos, promote news content about impeachment and feature Republicans who have criticized Trump’s actions regarding Ukraine. Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, for example, said that Trump’s calls for Ukraine and China to investigate Joe Biden were “wrong and appalling.” Many of ACRONYM’s ads focus on explaining the basics of Trump’s recent actions toward Ukraine. One Facebook ad, shared with POLITICO, is titled “How Trump triggered an impeachment inquiry” and includes three simple slides with images: “1. Freezing $391 million in aid for our ally Ukraine,” “2. Asking Ukraine to smear a political rival,” and “3. Trying to cover up the records of the phone call.”

“Our hypothesis is that the facts speak for themselves, so when you lay them out clearly people will understand what’s going on,” Kowalczyk said.
