Children and staff at an early learning centre in Perth's east are being offered antibiotics after a child was diagnosed with meningococcal disease.

The department said while meningococcal disease was an uncommon illness and bacteria were not easily spread from person to person, children and staff who were in close contact with the child were being provided the antibiotics as a precaution.

It defines close contact as anyone who spent two full days in the kindy room during the time in question, or who had 20 or more cumulative contact hours with children in the kindy. This includes children and staff in other rooms at the centre during the two-hour morning and afternoon periods when children of all ages come together.

Staff and parents of children at the centre who do not fall into these categories are being urged to be alert for symptoms of meningococcal disease.
