The Australian National University (ANU) faced scrutiny at a parliamentary inquiry for its investigation into a potential antisemitic incident at a student union meeting. Video footage suggested a student performed a Nazi salute and another mimicked a Hitler moustache during a debate on the pro-Palestine encampment and Jewish student experiences. An investigation concluded no such incidents occurred, drawing criticism from MPs and Jewish student groups.

The Australian National University ( ANU ) faced intense scrutiny at a parliamentary inquiry over its handling of a potential antisemitic incident at a student union meeting. The controversy erupted after video footage circulated online, seemingly depicting a student performing a Nazi salute and another mimicking a Hitler moustache during a discussion on ANU 's pro-Palestine encampment and the experiences of Jewish students.

A student was removed from the Zoom meeting, which drew about 500 attendees in May 2023. The ANU Students' Association (ANUSA) launched an investigation, concluding that no Nazi salute or Hitler moustache had occurred. ANU Vice Chancellor Professor Genevieve Bell defended the investigation's thoroughness, stating that multiple pieces of evidence, including videos, were examined. However, she declined to disclose specific details about the case, citing confidentiality concerns.Independent MP Josh Burns, who initiated the inquiry, expressed astonishment at the university's findings, questioning how they reached such a conclusion given the apparent evidence in the videos. Burns, along with the Australian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS), criticized ANU for failing to adequately consult or support Jewish students involved in the incident during the disciplinary process. While acknowledging the need for confidentiality, AUJS emphasized that the lack of transparency and communication eroded trust between Jewish students and the university administration. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges universities face in addressing antisemitism and creating safe and inclusive spaces for all students
