Qld’s bid to combat the Omicron wave by postponing term one has some health experts worried it will affect students’ mental health, obesity levels and delay their development.

“If we can just flatten out that peak a little bit by pushing the school opening date [back] by two weeks, that will reduce a lot of strain on the hospitals,” Dr Gerrard said on Tuesday.

While Prime Minister Scott Morrison has not directly criticised Queensland, he has suggested the Omicron wave is unavoidable. “A delay to return to in-person learning is not a proportionate response, notwithstanding the current Omicron outbreak,” they write.“Our own Australian data confirms COVID-19 is a mild disease in children, that the few hospitalisations are short-lived, and that the overwhelming majority of children recover from this virus without adverse effect.

The letter was written by child health experts David Isaacs and Fiona Russell, and psychiatry expert Professor Pat McGorry, with 31 other health professionals, academics and prominent Australians as signatories.
