APA Group wants a bigger slice of the $25 billion remote power market, so it is jumping in with its ears pinned back.

The miners have some of the heaviest lifting to do, cleaning up their power supply, and truck and locomotive fuels, and nearly all of it needs to happen in remote areas well away from established electricity grid infrastructure.

APA Group has had success in a couple of mining regions – Mt Isa in Queensland and Gruyere in Western Australia’s gold fields – developing, delivering and operating what it says is reliable and cost-effective integrated energy solutions. APA Group boss Adam Watson, who signed off on the deal after only nine months in the top job, says the acquisition is all about offering bundled solutions to big miner customers – which in the Pilbara means BHP, Fortescue Metals Group and Hancock’s Roy Hill.He says the Pilbara is only at the beginning in terms of its renewable generation build-out, while there are plenty of diesel-powered generators and trucks that are slated to be replaced by electricity as part of decarbonisation commitments.
