Officials are working to extinguish a structure fire that has produced a massive plume of smoke over Salt Lake City. Witnesses told 2News that the blaze sparked in an abandoned building in the area of 220 South 200 East around midnight Saturday and has been smoldering since. Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department have blocked off 200 South from Edison Street to 300 East and are warning of heavy smoke in and around the city.
Salt Lake fire crews are on scene and said they are initiating defensive operations, or a steady, exterior flow of water targeting the flames. By 8 a.m. Saturday, officials said they expected to be on scene for at least another 12 hours due to the building's risk of collapsing.Be sure to take the necessary precautions if you or anyone you know have existing health problems that can be aggravated by air pollution.
