There’s plenty of PE types in town for an industry powwow and general partner AGMs this week, but the one Street Talk’s watching is Apollo Global Management.

Apollo Global, for all its might offshore and $US500 billion, has long been underweight in Australia, dipping into the odd deal but without ever really trying to build a big team or dominate the local deals scene.

Jim Zelter, co-president of Apollo Global Management, made a stealth visit Down Under earlier this month.However, it is understood the more significant trip was a couple of weeks back when Apollo co-president Jim Zelter, who runs its day-to-day operations globally, came to Australia. And if history is any guide, it could also spell a bigger play for Australia’s $3.4 trillion in retirement savings.
