Helicopter vision of the incident showed six inmates spelling BLM on the ground, a reference to the Black Lives Matter protests occurring at the time. The protests often had a focus on Indigenous deaths in custody, including the death of David Dungay at Long Bay in 2015. Detective Superintendent Rohan Cramsie said police were "exploring" whether this drone was being used in an attempt to smuggle contraband into Long Bay.

It’s a concrete jungle and we’re paying the price.\n\n“We preserve and reserve the koala population in New South wales, we don’t need to be told what we can do with our own land.”\n\n
