The company behind Facebook and Instagram says Apple and Google and their app stores are better placed to prevent children joining social media.
Social media behemoth Meta wants the Australian government to force Apple and Google to police the age of phone users and give parents the ability to block their children under 16 from downloading social media apps.
Antigone Davis, Meta’s vice president and global head of safety, flew to Australia to front a government inquiry into social media use for a second time after a hearing in June. She joined Mia Garlick, Meta’s ANZ policy director. The pair faced questions about Instagram and Facebook’s age policies, scams and their decision
In an often tense two hours of questions, Ms Garlick and Ms Davis said Meta had systems to find users behaving suspiciously – sending repeated messages or requests to teenagers, for example. It flagged accounts where their stated age did not match birthday messages, Ms Davis said.
