This is largely due to how the area was first constructed, but preventing trucks from grinding into them every day would surely help.The City of Indianapolis conducted public meetings on the idea of closing the Circle to traffic in 2014 and 2015 as it was planning the massive rebuild of Market Street and eventually the Circle, said Dan Parker, chief deputy mayor and chief of staff to Mayor Joe Hogsett.
Construction on Market Street is expected to take place during 2027-28. At that point, another series of community meetings will be needed to"refresh" perspective on the Circle rebuild, Parker said. President and CEO Taylor Schaffer said her goal is to figure how to attract more people to the Circle for smaller, local events — regardless of whether the Circle remains open to traffic.
Figuring out smaller scale events to get people interested every week is a little tricky, but the city is not short on creatives with ideas. My colleagues and I write about them every day.Some argue that the businesses on the Circle and nearby rely on vehicular traffic. True, closing to traffic would limit the ability to drop folks with mobility issues off at ISO and other Circle businesses, but reconfiguring some or all of the spokes into designated drop-off areas could serve as a compromise.
Traffic is an issue, especially with all of the construction downtown. But drivers would adjust, and the numerous advantages outweigh inconvenience.Clearly, there's some political will required here. Business interests and public good may not perfectly align.
