A Berkeley woman suffered severe burns Wednesday when an electric hot plate apparently caused her robe to catch on fire.
BERKELEY — A woman in her 80s suffered severe burns Wednesday evening when an electric hot plate in her apartment apparently caused her clothing to catch fire, authorities said. She was being treated at a San Francisco hospital. Her condition was not available Thursday.
The woman was injured about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday inside her fourth floor apartment in the 2700 block of San Pablo Avenue. Interim Deputy Fire Chief Keith May said the department received several calls reporting a fire in the building and that someone was on fire. Firefighters found the woman on the fourth floor with neighbors pouring water on her, he said. She was eventually taken to a hospital.
Authorities said initial reports indicated the woman had an electric hot plate on the floor of her apartment that was plugged in and that the robe she was wearing apparently caught on fire through contact with the appliance.
