Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has blasted the United Nations Security Council for failing to implement a resolution against Russia's deadly and ongoing invasion, adding New Zealand will support Ukraine at the International Court of Justice.
Speaking about foreign policy at the Lowy Institute on Thursday, Ms Ardern slammed the UN Security Council for its “morally bankrupt” position.
“Equally, we cannot be left unable to respond to global challenges because we encounter dysfunction or, worse yet, moral failings.” “In recent times there has been no better example of that than the failure of the UN to appropriately respond to the war in Ukraine because of the position taken by Russia in the security council a morally bankrupt position on their part in the wake of a morally bankrupt and illegal war,” she said.
The UN Security Council’s resolution was put forward to the 15 members but failed after China, India, the United Arab Emirates and Russia voted against it. Ms Ardern labelled President Putin’s invasion “unquestionably illegal, and unjustifiable” and promised Ukraine that New Zealand would contribute to its case against Russia at the International Court of Justice.
