Two new openings next month signal a shift for the city’s struggling small music venues.

For Brisbane’s live music scene, recovering from the pandemic years has been like trying to get through the worst hangover of your life.

The end of restrictions was the false hope you get when you think you have recovered. You’re OK – good even – so you call your friends and make plans. It’s fun for a while. Nothing can hurt you. Then the reality of accumulated debt, creeping overheads and changing consumption habits hits, and it does, in fact, hurt. Suddenly, you’re on your knees. It’s sink or swim, push through or retreat.

“We lost all of that hard work. I really couldn’t even look at the word Brisbane for a couple of years.” “What I do know is that people love to see live music and events … we’re very assertive that we can come back into this space and be a full venue again.” Co-owner Dylan Proctor says they will maintain the flavour of their Ashgrove haunt – the north-American feel of the bar, vintage decor, and approachability. But with an upper level, they have more room to work with – in every sense. The Junk Bar sound engineer Shunya, co-owner Dylan Proctor and booking manager Fraser Bell at their soon-to-be new home on Brunswick Street in New Farm.
