Venice banned cruise ships for environmental and heritage reasons, and the vast majority of cruise passengers continues to visit from nearby ports. Meanwhile, arrivals by air accounted for 14.8 million visitors, but when was the last time you saw headlines about airline passengers “swamping” Venice? Tourist numbers in Venice are now projected to reach 38 million annually by 2030.
Some cities are considering ways to charge day trippers, such as with an entrance fee or higher port taxes. Currently port taxes per passenger on cruise ships hover between $6 and $23 depending on the destination.
