For many of us, 2021 will be another year that defies categorisation, where the borders between work, home and play were endlessly blurred. The best albums of the year were a bit like that too. Many of the records below were recorded in different circumstances than usual and as a result many blur the lines between musical genres and styles to create new and exciting sounds.
Loud, raucous and unashamedly punk, it would be easy to dismiss Amyl and the Sniffers as a whole lot of dumb, fun noise. Which it is – but it’s also a whole lot more. On their second album, the Sniffers and their taliswoman Amy Taylor take their songwriting and playing to a new level, injecting commentary on capitalism, feminism and identity in songs that sound tighter and more interesting than anything they’ve done before.
