The musical number, "For the First Time," will be one of four added to the mermaid's story and intended to better center on Ariel's experience in the world above the sea.

Ariel’s New Song In The Little Mermaid Puts Her Experience At Center Stage The Little Mermaid's director, Rob Marshall, revealed that one of the new songs added to the film will dive into Ariel's experience as she acclimates to living on land. "For the First Time," performed by actress Halle Bailey, will play out over a montage of the former mermaid taking her first steps and experiencing everything about the world above that she had been so eager to try.
Though Ariel fell in love with Eric after she saved him in The Little Mermaid, she had dreamed about walking on land long before she ever laid eyes on the prince. However, when her dreams finally came true, the experience was eclipsed by her love story. Of course, Ariel was doomed unless she got Eric to kiss her, so the urgency makes sense.
