For one, as those of you who live in areas with a high cost of living know all too well, it can cost a lot more to live in certain geographic areas. That means that a $12 minimum wage in California, while currently tied for the highest state minimum wage, barely even cracks the top 10 once adjusted for the cost of living.
At the other end of the spectrum, some states have a lower cost of living, which means their adjusted minimum wage may actually be higher. Arkansas is the perfect example. The minimum wage in Arkansas is $9.25. However, once adjusted for the cost of living, the wage figure rises to $10.69. Another important consideration is the fact that within states themselves, there can be major differences in the cost of living. Sticking with the state of California, it’s obvious that the cost of living in San Francisco is much higher than it is in Fresno. This means that a dollar earned in Fresno has more purchasing power than the same dollar in San Francisco.
